MCK to meet today with Federal Minister of Justice Lametti regarding new Gaming legislation

12/04/2020

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to advise the community that Ratitsénhaienhs Gina Deer, Mike Delisle, Jr. and Ross Montour will meet with Canada’s Minister of Justice David Lametti to discuss issues regarding new legislation that could affect Kahnawà:ke’s gaming industry.

Bill C-13, which was introduced into Parliament on November 26th, will legalize single-event sports betting in Canada.

While earlier expressing its disappointment that Bill C-13 does not specifically reference the interests of Indigenous people in the gaming industry, the MCK was encouraged to note that Minister Lametti stated that the Bill creates “the opportunity to work with Indigenous people to strengthen their participation in the gaming industry.”

“In previous discussions, Minister Lametti has acknowledged the ‘legitimate gaming architecture’ Kahnawà:ke has established, and has indicated his support for it,” stated Ietsénhaienhs Gina Deer earlier.

Today’s meeting will take place at 3pm and will be conducted via teleconference due to the pandemic.
