Holiday Message to the Community

12/17/2020

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawą:ke wishes to offer all Kahnawa’kehró:non the very best for the Holiday Season.

Without a doubt, this has been the most difficult year almost anyone can remember. The pandemic has affected each and every person around the world. Kahnawą:ke has not been immune to the effects of COVID-19, and we have all shared the burden of ensuring that our elders and the most vulnerable members of our community are spared from the ravages of the dreaded virus. Our people have been extremely diligent in making sure the safety measures have been followed. Kahnawą:ke has risen to the challenge, as it always does. For that, we should all be thankful.

Every year at this time, we think of the family members, friends, and colleagues who have passed on to the Spirit World. Unfortunately, 2020 saw the loss of Grand Chief Joseph Tokwiro Norton. His passing was a shock that is still being felt months later. His accomplishments will live on for a great many years to come. Nia:wen, Tokwiro.

As we look forward to a New Year, we should appreciate the good things that have come from the challenges of 2020. We have seen the community collectively express its gratitude and appreciation for the front-line workers who continue to serve without question. We continue to witness the generosity of those among us who are blessed with enough to assist those who aren’t as fortunate. We are seeing a community that is working together to make Kahnawą:ke the best and safest it can be.

We wish the Happiest of Holidays to each and every one of you, and may the New Year bring us all health and happiness!
