Hydro-Line 2 Dismantlement Project January Update
01/11/2021
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to update the community on works to dismantle Hydro-Québec Line 2B, which has been underway since November 2020. There are 64 transmission towers, 256 tower bases, and 9 km of line to be removed between now and spring 2021.
As of this date, the power lines between the Chateauguay boundary and the south side of the Seaway Canal have been removed. The work was completed on December 19, 2020.
The next phase of work started on January 6, with the preparation of access roads for the movement and placement of specialized equipment.
The week of January 11, dismantlement of towers and soil excavation activities will begin. A Kahnawake Environment Protection Office (KEPO) representative will be on site.
The week of January 25 is scheduled for the clearing of trees necessary for access to the work area on the North Wall (see October 30 PSA titled, ′Hydro Quebec call for Bids for Tree Services′). KEPO representatives will be present to ensure that suitable Black Ash trees will be salvaged for basket making, and other trees will be set aside for use by community members for firewood.
A location where the trees will be available to the community will be identified, and the community will be notified in a timely manner.
The MCK would like to thank the community for their cooperation during this important project.
