Tobacco Sales Prohibited to Minors
09/24/2008
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawake would like to remind the community that the sale of all tobacco products to persons under the age of eighteen (18) is prohibited.
Recent news reports suggest that a majority of high school students from neighboring communities are buying their cigarettes from smoke shops located on the Territory. While most retailers refuse to sell to minors, it has come to the MCK’s attention that some are accused of allowing minors to purchase cigarettes and other tobacco products.
"It’s not about following Canada’s or Quebec’s law on tobacco,” said tobacco portfolio Chief Peggy Mayo-Standup. “Rather, it’s a matter of social responsibility. We should be respecting our traditional values and work towards protecting the health of young people – no matter where they live.”
