Keep fire hydrants clear of snow

02/05/2021

Forwarded on behalf of the Kahnawake Fire Brigade

The Kahnaw:ke Fire Brigade (KFB) is asking the community to ensure that fire hydrants are kept free of snow when performing snow clearing operations.

In light of the upcoming snow in the forecast, and more importantly for the entire winter season, it is crucial that fire hydrants remain clear of snow.

KFB responders require at least four (4) feet of access around every hydrant to ensure adequate room for equipment when responding to a fire. A blocked or covered hydrant reduces the important response time needed when tending to an emergency.  The time it takes for a firefighter to shovel a hydrant clear could mean the difference between saving a life or not.

The Mohawk Council of Kahnaw:ke Public Works crews maintain the snow clearing around the hydrants, which are often covered by snow from individuals or private plowing contractors.

If you see a hydrant covered in snow, please take it upon yourself to clear it. The KFB thanks you for your cooperation.
