Update on soil quality assessment work in Lot 106
02/11/2021
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke wishes to update the community regarding the ongoing efforts to assess soil quality and potential presence of asbestos-containing material (ACM) fragments in the Lot 106 area.
The first phase of the process of digging test pits began on January 26 and was completed on February 3 in Lot 106 phase 2 (see map below). A total of 125 test pits were dug, with two (2) pieces of ACM identified.
Additional digging took place from February 3 to February 8 in Lot 106 phase 4, which runs along the railroad (see map below). At that time a total of 80 test pits were dug, with several additional pieces of ACM identified.
Samples have been acquired and the results are expected at a later date. The consultants on this project, Arcadis Inc., have been on site throughout the process.
“The Asbestos Working Group appreciates the patience and cooperation of the community throughout this whole situation, “ said Ratsénhaienhs Cody Diabo, who is the lead Portfolio Chief on this issue. “We remain committed to addressing this situation as safely as possible which, at times, means we can’t move too quickly. While we await the results of this most recent testing, we are already planning for the next phases of soil characterization.”
Please note that any ACM identified was properly disposed of. As was indicated when the project began, all test pits are immediately back filled after the work is completed each day. All appropriate safety measures and protocols are in effect and have been followed.
