Boston Bruins Day Declared in Kahnawà:ke

10/17/2008

Grand Chief Michael Ahríhrhon Delisle, Jr. announced today that he has declared Friday, 24 Kenténha/October as the “Official Boston Bruins Day in Kahnawà:ke.”

The event is being designated as a means of honoring the Boston Bruins Alumni, who will be playing a charity hockey game in the community the following day. The game will be followed by an already-sold-out dinner/dance with the players in attendance. The complete proceeds from both events will go to two local non-profit organizations: the Karihwanoron Mohawk Immersion program and the Turtle Island Theatre Company. The event sponsors, Brian Goodleaf and Mohawk Genivar, are bearing most of the costs of putting on the event.

“We’re not only recognizing the Boston Bruins but, also, their many fans in Kahnawà:ke,” said Chief Delisle. “There are any number of reasons for their popularity here, including the fact that Six Nations legend Stan Jonathan had his most productive years in Boston.”

A banner will be erected in a prominent area in Kahnawà:ke and community members will be encouraged to wear the team colors of black and gold.

Kahnawà:ke schools will allow their students to wear hockey jerseys or Bruins colors on that date at a cost of two dollars, with the monies collected being added to the fundraising effort.

“Of course, if other businesses or organizations join in, it’ll just add to the sense of fun and celebration,” said Chief Delisle.
