Work to date on Asbestos Containing Material
04/15/2021
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke wishes to update the community on all work related to the situation with soils containing Asbestos Containing Materials (ACM). At present, several residential lots in the 106 area, a private lot on Route 207, and an area on Tekakwitha Island have been completely remediated.
The MCK has hired an environmental consulting firm that has carried out soil samples in the 106 area to help in the creation of a remedial management plan. The consultant will use this information to provide potential options for the lots that have identified ACM in the soil. There is the potential for more Soil Sampling to be done this year. Results of the sampling will be provided to the Ratitsénhaienhs (Council of Chiefs), who will determine how to move forward with resolving the whole situation.
“Although it may not look like much, a lot of work has been dedicated to this situation. The Asbestos Working Group is committed to coming up with solutions to finally resolve this issue and to ensure nothing like this happens again” said Ratsénhaienhs Cody Diabo, who holds the Portfolio for The ACM issue. “The Health and safety of everyone is at the forefront which is why policy is being reviewed. There is also another Working Group which is dedicated to Health and Safety. Of course, there is also the Asbestos Civil Investigation which is scheduled to commenced in the beginning of May”.
An ACM Fact Sheet is available online at www.kahnawake.com with information about how to identify materials that are potential ACM and what to do if you find them.
