MCK Expresses Concerns Over Public Safety
10/17/2008
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke would like to express concerns over an issue of public safety, while offering support for a new initiative by the Kahnawà:ke Peacekeepers.
It has come to the attention of the MCK that several high-speed chases within the Territory, including at least two in the middle of the village, were as a result of people engaged in the tobacco trade.
Some of these people are driving with no licenses, registrations and/or insurance; some of the vehicles are unroadworthy.
The Peacekeepers have announced plans to conduct operations and vehicle spot checks “with an emphasis on motorists who may be endangering the safety of community members.”
“While the MCK has been steadfast in its support of the industry as an Aboriginal right, it cannot defend or support people who are in contravention of basic safety laws and, especially, those who refuse to stop for police and attempt to escape, leading to potentially dangerous consequences” said Mike Bush, Justice portfolio chief.
Additionally, the MCK wishes to reiterate its position that the infiltration of the industry by undesirable elements is unacceptable.
