Kahnawake Emergency Preparedness Law amended

04/21/2021

The Kahnaw:ke Legislative Coordinating Commission would like to inform the community that the Kahnaw:ke Emergency Preparedness Law (the Law) was amended on April 6, 2021 by MCR #1/2020-2021. Additionally, a Mohawk Council Executive Directive (#1/2021-2022) was passed to adopt regulations concerning the authority of the Commissioner of Public safety, and to appoint and attribute enforcement authority to Inspectors during the Recovery Period.

The amendment allows for the instating of a Recovery Period after a State of Emergency has been lifted, to ensure a gradual transition between the height of an emergency to a state of normalcy.

The Law was originally created November 11, 1997 at which time an Emergency Committee was formed. The Council of Chiefs and the Emergency Committee have the authority under emergency measures to amend the law during a State of Emergency, which Kahnaw:ke has endured since April 21, 2020.

The community will have the chance to recommend changes to the Law through the CDMP once the State of Emergency is over and the current restrictions to hold public meetings have been lifted.

The community may view the Law and Regulations on the CDMP website (www.kahnawakemakingdecisions.com).
