Hydro-Line Decommissioning Update
05/31/2021
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to update the community on works being carried out for the Hydro-Québec Dismantlement project.
All towers slated for removal have now been taken down, with the exception of four (4) towers which will remain standing at the landowner’s request. Work continues this week on removing the final tower base on the North Wall. This base had been left in place until the end of May as it was discovered that snakes were over-wintering below it. The snakes have now left the site and work has begun. A replacement over-wintering habitat will be constructed once the tower base is removed.
The work on the North Wall involves the removal of a significant amount of soil and gravel and therefore heavy trucks will be using the Seaway Road on the North Wall regularly for the next two (2) to three (3) weeks. Please use extra caution when driving in this area and obey construction signage and flagman directions.
Minor works will also be taking place along the rest of the line to import additional clean fill to some former tower bases that have settled during the thaw period and to distribute native seeds in disturbed wetland areas.
The MCK thanks the community for their patience and cooperation throughout this project.
