Town Garage move one step closer
06/08/2021
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke wishes to advise the community that a parcel of land along the St. Lawrence Seaway has been officially designated for use for the new ‘Blue Collar Park,’ which was announced in June 2019.
The request for approval was passed by consensus at yesterday’s duly-convened Council meeting. 22.8 acres located within SLS-10-3 will be used for the Blue Collar Park (town garage facility), which will be used by Public Works, Capital Unit, Waste Management Department, and School Bus Transportation operations. When completed, it will replace the current facilities (with the exception of the Wastewater Treatment Plant) located near the Services Complex.
The land is located along the Seaway in the area directly across from Magic Palace on Highway 132. It had been designated as ‘commercial lands’ for many years, but Tewatohnhi’saktha had indicated that there were no plans to use it for that purpose.
An extensive information campaign and public consultation took place in late 2019 and early 2020, once the residents who live closest to the Town garage were consulted. Overall, over 81% of those surveyed expressed support for the move, many citing safety concerns because of the heavy vehicle traffic and especially because children board buses at the current depot.
At this time, no date has been announced for the work to begin. The initial task will be the removal of tons of rock from the site. The community will be kept up to date on the progress of this major project.
