Aquatic Insect & Small Fish Sampling

06/23/2021

The Kahnawà:ke Environment Protection Office (KEPO) would like to inform the community that we will be completing aquatic insect and small fish sampling on Thursday, June 24, in collaboration with the Akwesasne Environment Department and the St. Lawrence River Institute.

The work will take place at two locations in the Bay, including near the newly constructed beach and in proximity to the Iron Worker’s Monument. Grab samples of sediment will be collected to search for the aquatic insects, and active netting will be conducted to capture, identify, measure, and release small fish and minnows.

The two sites will become part of a larger project led by the Akwesasne Environment Department to assess the health of small fish species and their habitats in nearshore locations of the St. Lawrence River.

Community members are welcome to come out and ask questions of the survey team in the field or call KEPO at 450-635-0600 for more information.
