The following message is being distributed as a public service.
It has come to the attention of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke that there have been changes to the policy of some local Société de l’assurance automobiles de Québec (SAAQ) offices that will affect individuals who are replacing lost driver’s licenses or acquiring a learner’s permit. Standard license renewals via mail will not be affected.
The new policy requires that the person provide a birth certificate and a passport to verify identity.
This is now in effect at the smaller offices in Chateauguay and St. Remi. However, according to the SAAQ, status cards will continue to be accepted at the larger SAAQ offices, such as those located at Valleyfield and Longueuil.
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke feels that this is unacceptable and has contacted the Secretariat des affaires autochtones (SAA) for clarification on this issue.
