The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke wishes to advise the community that the first official Public Notice of Application for Residency under the Kahnawà:ke Residency Law (the Law) is now posted. The posting appears at the end of this release.
Applications for residency have been available at the Office of the Kanien’kehá:ka Registry (OKKR) since June of 2021. As per the Law and its regulations, applicants are subject to a 30-day public posting. Written objections must be made to, and received by, the Office of the Kahnawà:ke Kanien’kehá:ka Registry.
The Kahnawà:ke Residency Law was passed by the community via the Community Decision Making Process, then formally enacted by Chief and Council on June 17, 2019. According to the Law, individuals not eligible to be on the Kahnawà:ke Kanien’kehá:ka Registry need to apply for residency.
