Update on Dredging in the bay

08/16/2021

The Kahnawà:ke Environment Protection Office (KEPO) would like to update the community on the status of the dredging operation in the bay.

The work has been progressing well since it began on August 2nd. A slurry of water and sediment is being pumped on to the island and dewatered once on land. A large volume of sediment is being removed each day and is being mixed with sand to create topsoil to support plantings on the island. The dredger will be moving to a new work area the week of August 16th.

To prevent sediment from escaping from the work zone and moving downriver, turbidity curtains have been installed across the bay. (See map below)

This will block access for boats and paddlers through this section of the work until the completion of dredging, scheduled for September 15th.

KEPO thanks the community for their patience and understanding as we complete this aspect of the project. For more information or to provide feedback, please contact KEPO at bayproject@mck.ca or 450-635-0600.
