MCK Statement on Plaza Royale

The Mohawk Council of Kahnaw�:ke (MCK) is advising the community that it has sent a registered letter to the proponents of the business using the name �Plaza Royale,� located at the Plaza 138 in Kahnaw�:ke.

Council has decided that, as a matter of public policy, the proposed gaming facility should not be granted a license by the Kahnaw�:ke Gaming Commission and has transmitted that recommendation to the KGC.

Council decided unanimously that it cannot - and will not - support the establishment of a land-based casino by private interests. This decision was guided by the fact that the community rejected proposals for such an enterprise twice: in a referendum held in 1994 and another in 2003.

In their letter, sent on 4, Kentenhk�:wa/November and received the next day, the MCK advised the proponents (John Stacey and Michael Stalk) that the establishment and/or operation of the proposed gaming facility would be contrary to section 31.1 of the Kahnaw�:ke Gaming Law and, therefore, illegal.

The MCK has requested that the proponents provide written confirmation that they will immediately cease and desist from any further efforts to construct or equip the proposed gaming facility and no gaming services will be offered to the public from this facility.
