Fourth Wave hits Kahnawake

08/26/2021

The Public Safety Division of the Mohawk Council of Kahnaw:ke and the Kateri Memorial Hospital Centre′s Public Health unit wish to provide the following important information to Kahnawa′kehr:non.

COVID-19, in particular the Delta variant, has taken root in Kahnaw:ke and is rapidly spreading. We can officially announce a 4th wave. As of today, Kahnaw:ke has had a total of 51 Delta variant COVID-19 cases, of which 15 are currently active. We are continually evaluating the overall level of risk within the community and ways in which we can mitigate the current outbreaks. The primary goal of measures is to prevent further outbreaks, ensure that our children can attend school this coming school year, avoid future lockdowns, ensure that the economy can keep going, that people can still gather, that our healthcare institutions can remain open, and that we protect our frontline workers′ ability to respond.

While we are not in a state of emergency at the present moment, we cannot let our guard down. We are evaluating the required measures, and we ask that community members limit their social contacts, always wear masks in public areas, and maintain distance and hygiene practices at all times.

Additionally, community members who venture off the Territory need to be aware of Quebec′s rules/regulations/laws regarding the province′s COVID-19 measures. Quebec has directed that only those who can prove they have received two doses of the vaccine will be allowed to participate in numerous activities fully.

The terms "Vaccine Passport" and "QR Codes" have become familiar buzzwords that, for some, have become confusing. It is an individual responsibility of each Kahnawa′kehr:non who wish to access the QR Code/Vaccine Passport to follow the directions at the following link: https://www.quebec.ca/en/health/health-issues/a-z/2019-coronavirus/progress-of-the-covid-19-vaccination/covid-19-vaccination-passport

More information on Kahnaw:ke′s plans/actions will be forthcoming once we are able to completely evaluate and assess the current situation, which remains very unsettled at this time.

Please stay vigilant and continue to take every precaution: washing hands, masking, social distancing and, importantly, follow public health guidelines and directives. We cannot underestimate the DELTA variant and the NEW risk that it brings to the community and our loved ones.
