KEPO Fish Sampling October 4th-6th
09/29/2021
The Kahnawà:ke Environment Protection Office (KEPO) would like to inform the community that they will be completing fish sampling training from Monday to Wednesday, October 4th – 6th, in the Suzanne River, Little Suzanne River, and/or North Creek.
Sampling will be done using a backpack electrofishing unit, which is used to stun fish with an electrical current. Once fish have been measured, they will be returned safely to the stream. A very small subset of small fish will be kept as specimens.
The use of this equipment creates a temporary electrical hazard within 100m upstream and downstream of the sampling area. KEPO is asking the community to keep away from the areas of the river marked on the map below while they are present and conducting sampling.
KEPO staff and vehicles will be clearly marked so that accidental entry into the sampling area will be prevented. Once sampling is complete, the river will be safe for normal use.
This is part of KEPO’s larger aquatic monitoring program in Kahnawà:ke. For questions, please call 450-635-0600 or email environmentprotection@mck.ca.
