KEPO Fish Sampling Rescheduled to October 13th-15th

10/05/2021

The Kahnawà:ke Environment Protection Office (KEPO) would like to inform the community that it will be completing fish sampling training on Wednesday, October 13th – Friday, October 15th in the Suzanne River, Little Suzanne River, and/or North Creek. This training and sampling exercise is being rescheduled from the original dates of October 4th - 6th due to a last-minute schedule disruption.

Sampling will be done using a backpack electrofishing unit, which is used to stun fish with an electrical current. Once fish have been measured, they will be returned safely to the stream. A very small subset of small fish will be kept as specimens. The use of this equipment creates a temporary electrical hazard within 100m upstream and downstream of the sampling area.

KEPO is asking the community to stay out of the areas of the river marked on the map below while they are present and conducting sampling. KEPO staff and vehicles will be clearly marked to prevent accidental entry into the sampling area. Once sampling is complete, the river will be safe for normal use.

This is part of KEPO’s larger aquatic monitoring program in Kahnawà:ke. For questions, please contact KEPO at 450-635-0600 or environmentprotection@mck.ca
