Preparing for Extreme Cold Weather
01/14/2009
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke’s Community Protection Unit would like to inform residents that, due to current cold weather conditions, special care should be taken to protect our families and homes.
Periodically check your home’s water pipes and let a tap drip to ensure continuous water movement. Make certain that you have sufficient fuel for heating (wood, oil, propane, etc.) and proper ventilation of all alternate heating sources (stove pipes, air vents).
Although it is advisable to remain indoors, if you must venture outside, make sure to properly cover up. Extreme cold will cause frostbite in a matter of minutes.
“Be sure to check on elders you know who live alone, or neighbors with limited mobility,” said Emergency Preparedness and Planning Manager, Kellyann Meloche. “These cold conditions sometimes cause distress in our homes; we must keep an eye on our elders in these next few days.”
