Prepare your home for cold weather conditions

11/15/2021

The Public Safety Division of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke would like to remind homeowners to properly prepare their homes for the upcoming winter season.

For mobile and older homes with a crawl space:

  • Seal up cracks and crevices in the foundation and close any cellar/crawl space windows
  • Install foam sleeves around water lines with heat tape and make sure it is plugged in and functioning properly
  • Ensure that the skirt under the mobile home is properly closed

Shut off the water supply to your outside taps and leave the outside valve open to drain out any water to prevent damage from freezing. If you have previously experienced problems with frozen pipes after extremely cold weather, it is recommended that you leave a cold water tap trickling when the temperature drops to extreme lows.

For further information on preparing for the winter, visit the Emergency Preparedness page at www.kahnawake.com/org/cpu/beprepared.
