RED ALERT level in Kahnawake

11/27/2021

The Public Safety Commission and Kahnawą:ke Public Health would like to advise the community that, effective immediately, we are in RED ALERT level in Kahnawą:ke, which indicates a HIGH level of RISK of getting COVID-19.

The number of active COVID-19 cases has risen drastically in the last 24 hours to 19 active cases and over 60 people in isolation. The biggest volume of cases at this time is with 4-5-year-olds, with impacts at Step by Step and Kateri School.

The Kahnawą:ke Public Health team is working tirelessly but is unable to keep up with contact tracing required within an acceptable amount of time to control the current transmission levels, increasing the risk of having contagious individuals with COVID-19 in the community without their knowledge.

Our current level of recovery puts the responsibility on each community member to make informed decisions for their own health. It is very important that prior to participating in a group activity at this time, that you evaluate the level of risk of the activity for you and your family, keeping in mind this new information we are providing to you. You can decrease risk by avoiding get-togethers outside of your family for a short period of time. If not, please consider getting together outdoors, always wear a mask, keep a distance, wash hands.

A big team effort for a short period of time will help us get control of the outbreaks so that we all can remain safe and healthy, especially with the holidays approaching.
