Annual Christmas Bird Count in Kahnawake on Saturday, December 18th
12/09/2021
The Kahnawą:ke Environment Protection Office (KEPO)
would like to inform the community that Kahnawą:ke will once again participate in the annual Christmas Bird Count on Saturday, December 18, 2021. Two teams will begin in the morning, continue until late afternoon, and cover specific areas in the community.
The Inland Team will be in the areas of Big Fence, Tekakwitha Island, green spaces along the seaway, old railroad tracks, Tower Road, the golf clubs along the 207, and common lands near Highway 30. The Seaway Team will be in the area of the North Wall from the Ste. Catherine locks to the end of the Kahnawą:ke land base.
The teams have been instructed to stay on the main roads described above so as not to disturb homeowners or private properties. Participants will also be following COVID-19 protocols, including physical distancing, hand hygiene, and mask-wearing.
Participants of the bird count are from KEPO, as well as local and non-local volunteers. If you are interested in participating (with or without past bird count experience), please register with the bird count coordinator, Sheldon Harvey, at christmasbirdcount@yahoo.com.
The Kahnawą:ke Environment Protection Office has participated in the bird count for many years and supports this initiative which gathers valuable bird population data. This will be the 86th year that Bird Protection Quebec has conducted the Montreal-area Christmas Bird Count. The area covered by this survey is a 24-km wide circle centered in Montreal West.
For more information, please contact KEPO at 450-635-0600 or environmentprotection@mck.ca.
