Big Fence Ecological Inventory

05/02/2022

The Kahnawà:ke Environment Protection Office (KEPO) is pleased to inform the community of the continuation of an ecological study in the Big Fence area beginning in May 2022 and lasting through the fall.

The inventories will continue the work begun in 2021 with a focus on fish, turtles, and amphibians. In 2021, unusually dry conditions and low water levels in the St. Lawrence River prevented an appropriate assessment of the use of the Big Fence wetlands by fish and other water-loving wildlife.

These inventories will fill in these knowledge gaps and allow KEPO to make informed decisions regarding conservation for the Big Fence area going forward.

The work will take place with the assistance of a hired consultant, Tetratech (PTA). The consultant will be accompanied by KEPO staff at all times.

The first inventories will take place from Tuesday, May 3, to Thursday, May 5, and will include surveys for fish. Details of additional surveys will be provided prior to their start date.

For questions, please contact KEPO at 450-635-0600 or environmentprotection@mck.ca.
