Residents asked not to flush refuse into the sewer system

05/02/2022

The Public Works Unit of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke would like to advise all local residents and businesses to ensure that certain items are not flushed into the sewer system.

Items such as cloth rags, wipes (baby or other) and other non-flushable materials should not be disposed of in your toilet. These items cause significant damage to the sewage and pumping systems. These items can also cause very costly repairs in your home’s plumbing and sewage system.

Please ensure that non-flushable items are disposed of properly, and not in your home’s toilets.

Crews have cleaned out the pumping stations at Turtle Bay and have removed a significant amount of garbage that does not belong in our sewer system. Should these blockages lead to pump failure, it could result in the devastating effects of emergency pumping to ensure the system does not back up into homes.
