Dry weather increases risk of grass fires
05/05/2022
The Public Safety Division of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke, in conjunction with the Kahnawake Fire Brigade and Kahnawake Peacekeepers, would like to remind all community members about the increased risk of grass fires due to the dry weather.
The current fire conditions in Kahnawà:ke and Tioweró:ton are HIGH. With the incoming dry weather and sun for the next week or more, we are headed into some bad conditions in regard to brush fires. Conditions may become EXTREME very shortly.
Brush fires pose a risk to the health and safety of the community and our first responders.
If you’re driving an all-terrain vehicle (ATV), please be reminded that parts of the engine and exhaust systems are hot enough to ignite dry grass and brush.
Additionally, if you see any suspicious activity or see a grass fire, please contact the Peacekeepers at (450) 632-6505. Starting grass fires is a crime.
Residents are also being reminded to be safe and to ensure that campfires are contained in a firepit and monitored at all times.
For more information on grassfires, contact the Kahnawake Fire Brigade at (450) 632-2010 or the Public Safety Division at (450) 632-0635.
