Public Works to delay grass cutting for No Mow May
05/19/2022
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke wishes to advise the community that the Public Works Unit will delay grass cutting until the end of May. The decision was made after some discussions with a concerned Kahnawa’kehró:non regarding “No Mow May,” and the cutting of some common areas and parks.
“No Mow May” is a voluntary program promoted by the Kahnawake Environment Protection Office (KEPO). It is designed to raise awareness about the importance of protecting biodiversity and pollinators during an important stage of their life cycle.
For the remainder of the month, the Public Works Unit will monitor greenspaces and parks, to see the potential impact on the residents who use these areas. In conjunction with KEPO, the Public Works Unit will also gather feedback and comments, and conduct some research into other options or plant species for certain greenspaces.
The Public Works Unit would also like to assure the community that it will continue to take part in future “No Mow May” initiatives and will gather more information on the potential impacts of delaying grass cutting for the month of May.
