Deadline Monday as Kahnawake Justice Commission seeks new members

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawą:ke wishes to remind the community that the Kahnawą:ke Justice Commission (“the Commission”) is seeking two community representatives to serve as members of the Commission. The deadline to apply is this coming Monday, June 13, 2022.

Roles and Responsibilities include:

  • Providing oversight to  MCK Justice Services;
  • Ensuring the independence of judges;
  • Ensuring the institutional independence of the Court of Kahnawą:ke; and
  • Ensuring  the reasonable and sufficient independence of members of the Administrative Tribunal.

The Commission meets monthly, with honorarium provided as per the Kahnawą:ke Justice Commission Honorarium Policy. Eligibility requirements can be found in the Terms of Reference (click here).

The Kahnawą:ke Justice Commission consists of three (3) voting members, with one (1) non-voting member (the Commissioner of Justice) serving as the Chairperson. The Commission’s mandate is to provide oversight to Justice Services by monitoring its activities in matters concerning the administration of the Kahnawą:ke Justice System, and to also ensure that the integrity of the Kahnawą:ke Justice System is protected and defended.
