Information regarding Bill 96 and Civil Marriage Documentation

06/16/2022

The Justice Services Division of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawą:ke wishes to advise the community that, in accordance with Bill-96, as of June 1, 2022, Quebec is only issuing marriage and civil union certificates in French.

Although it is still possible to fill out a Declaration of Marriage (DEC-50) or Civil Union (DEC-55) form in English after June 1, 2022, all marriage and civil union certificates will be drawn up in French.

Also, certificates and copies of acts relating to marriages and civil unions registered in the Civil Registry as of June 1, 2022, are issued in French.

Please note that the Court of Kahnawake will still provide a commemorative certificate of marriage in English for ceremonies officiated by our Justices of the Peace. However, this is not a recognized document by the province.

For further information, please call the Court of Kahnawą:ke at 450-638-5647.
