Grand Chief meeting with Premier Legault today
08/16/2022
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke wishes to inform the community that Ohén:ton Í:iente ne Ratitsénhaienhs (Grand Chief) Kahsennenhawe Sky-Deer and Ietsénhaienhs Tonya Perron will meet with Quebec Premier François Legault today in Quebec City.
Ka’nahsóhon Deer will accompany the Kenitsénhaienhs as a traditional/spiritual resource person.
This will be the first meeting with Legault since he was elected in 2018. It has been noted that the long delay in scheduling this meeting has been a cause for concern, as meetings between Quebec’s premiers and Kahnawà:ke’s grand chiefs have been held as a matter of routine for many years. There has been added urgency to meet due to Kahnawà:ke’s strong concerns over Quebec’s Bill 96 language legislation.
“This meeting is overdue,” said Sky-Deer. “The Council of Chiefs decided to stop all meetings with the province until Mr. Legault set aside time to meet face-to-face. There are various topics to discuss, therefore we have not set a formal agenda. We’re hoping that this is the first of other meetings to come.”
The meeting will take place at Mr. Legault’s office from 1 to 2pm.
