Kahnawake Animal Control Services update concerning Mange Fox situation
08/22/2022
Kahnawą:ke Animal Control Services (ACS) wishes to advise the community that multiple foxes have been reported with mange. ACS has recently picked up two deceased foxes in different areas of the community (Tekakwitha Island, South Creek Road area).
Although both foxes presented with mange, the cause of death is unknown at this time. Forets, Faune et Parcs Quebec was contacted, and both foxes were sent for testing to rule out Distemper/Rabies. These viruses are preventable if vaccinated against them.
As a precaution, Animal Control is urging the community to have their pets vaccinations up to date. There is currently no vaccine for mange, but it is treatable.
In light of this situation, Kahnawą:ke Animal Control Services has scheduled a vaccine clinic on Sunday, September 11, 2022, from 9am-1pm (may go till 3pm if required) by appointment only. Costs for this special vaccination clinic will be shared when appointments are made.
If you wish not to wait for the clinic date, it is recommended to visit your local veterinarian at your earliest convenience.
