MCK issues reminder regarding Cannabis retail
09/02/2022
The Mohawk Council of Kahnaw:ke wishes to remind the community that there are currently no licensed cannabis retailers operating in the Territory, and none will be permitted until the regulations are enacted and the dispensary license application process is officially launched. The regulations regarding the retail portions of the Kahnaw:ke Cannabis Control Law are in the final development stage and will be posted to the KLCC website once finalized.
The MCK would also like to remind the community that the retail sale of cannabis without a license is a criminal offence and could also result in disqualifying an applicant from obtaining a license in the future.
The Kahnaw:ke Cannabis Control Law was created to assert our jurisdiction in response to Canada′s legalization of cannabis. Prior to and during the drafting of the law, community consultations were held to determine the need to regulate the cannabis industry within the Territory. One of the main concerns noted throughout the consultations was the need to prioritize public health and safety. Regulating and inspecting cannabis products is key to maintaining proper vigilance and oversight in the Kahnaw:ke-controlled cannabis industry and to ensure that the products are obtained from legitimate sources.
