Contract awarded to remove the selected trees at the Multi-Purpose Building site

09/26/2022

Sent on behalf of the Multi-Purpose Building Project Team

The Multi-Purpose Building Project Team (“the Project Team”) wishes to inform the community that local contractor A.D. Tree Service has been awarded the contract to remove the selected trees within the footprint of the future building for the purposes of prepping the site for construction of the new facility.

Tree tagging was completed last week. The work included several walk-throughs with Knowledge Keepers, the Kahnawà:ke Environment Protection Office, and the Environmental Consultant. The Project Team continues to work directly and diligently with this group to identify sensitive areas and to ensure that only those trees and brush clearly identified will be removed. Public Works will begin the brush removal this week.

The Knowledge Keepers will walk the site with the Tree Service contractor before works begin to identify the best methods of tree removal that would allow for the use of the wood. These trees will be harvested for community use and placed at a designated area along the Seaway Road for pick-up.

Work will begin on or near October 5th and is expected to take approximately 30 days. Knowledge Keepers will continue working with the Project Team and the contractor, and will work to ensure best practices for removal, and community use of the wood.

It is hoped that work on the new facility will begin in the spring of 2023.
