Engagement sessions for proposed Kahnawake Tobacco Law begin Wednesday

10/03/2022

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to inform the community that the first engagement session for the proposed Kahnawà:ke Tobacco Law will take place at the Golden Age Club this Wednesday, October 5th, from 12pm (noon) to 4pm.

Although the draft law was reviewed in its entirety and consensus was reached for each original section during the Community Decision Making Process (CDMP) hearings in 2015-2016, there are several sections that need to be addressed in terms of legal issues, and to provide the necessary consistency with other laws.

The updated draft of the proposed Law is being made available to the community in order to begin the community engagement. This updated draft focuses solely on the highlighted sections of the draft Law (which can be viewed on the Kahnawà:ke Tobacco Law page on the KLCC website at www.kahnawakemakingdecisions.com).

“It’s time for interested persons to step forward to give their input on the proposed law,” said Ratsénhaienhs Cody Diabo, who is the lead on this file on behalf of the MCK. “The working group, which includes industry representatives, have worked tirelessly to propose new wording to numerous sections of the law so that it will both regulate and protect the industry, and assert and protect our jurisdiction.”

Another engagement session is scheduled for Wednesday, October 26th, from 3pm to 6pm. at the Golden Age Club.

For further information, please contact Ratsénhaienhs Cody Diabo at cody.diabo@mck.ca, or Peggy Mayo-Standup (representing the KTA) at Pegmay1954@gmail.com.
