Sky-Deer, Jay Treaty Border Alliance, to meet with Federal Ministers today

10/19/2022

The Mohawk Council of Kahnaw:ke wishes to advise the community that Ohn:ton :iente ne Ratitsnhaienhs (Grand Chief) Kahsennenhawe Sky-Deer will participate in a meeting between the Jay Treaty Border Alliance and three (3) Federal Ministers on the topic of border crossing.

Ministers Marco Mendicino (Public Safety), Marc Miller (Crown-Indigenous Relations) and Sean Fraser (Immigration and Citizenship) will host the meeting in Ottawa at 5:30pm.

We are looking forward to this long-awaited meeting with Federal Ministers to begin the dialogue to address our border crossing rights, said Grand Chief Sky-Deer. Canada has not implemented the principles of the Jay Treaty, and Onkwehn:we from all across Turtle Island should be able to exercise freedom of passage and entitlement to benefits no matter what side of the line they reside or were born on.

Grand Chief Abram Benedict is expected to attend as well, along with representatives from Six Nations, Kanehsat:ke, and Caldwell First Nation. All are members of the Jay Treaty Border Alliance.
