Indigenous Communities and Transport Canada Visiting Kahnawake
10/20/2022
The Kahnawą:ke Environment Protection Office (KEPO) wishes to inform the community that a group attending the Enhanced Maritime Situational Awareness (EMSA) conference will be visiting the community today (Thursday, October 20th). The group consists of thirteen Indigenous coastal communities and Transport Canada, who will be doing a bus tour of the community and Tekakwitha Island.
The EMSA pilot project, co-developed by Transport Canada and Indigenous partner communities, aims to build a web-based system to increase maritime awareness for Indigenous and coastal communities. KEPO has been a partner in the project developing the system since 2018.
The EMSA system provides real-time vessel information, environmental data, tidal data, and more. KEPO has been utilizing the system for several projects, including tracking marine traffic moving through Kahnawą:ke and monitoring air quality.
For more information, please contact the KEPO at 450-635-0600 or EnvironmentProtection@mck.ca.
