Beaver management activities underway
11/07/2022
The Public Safety Division of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to advise Kahnawa’kehró:non, that work has begun to manage beaver populations in the area near the Canadian Pacific Railway tracks between the Clay Mountains, New Development, and other areas of the community.
The purpose of this work is to reduce the number of beaver dams and lodges that have caused flooding issues in the aforementioned areas. A drone will be used to help identify dams in locations not easily accessible on foot. Once dams are located, traps will be set to reduce the beaver population.
Efforts to use the remains of the animals will be made and offered to the community. The trapped beavers will be processed for consumption (meat will be tested to verify if it is safe to eat, then frozen), and the pelts will be made available for tanning.
The drone piloting and beaver management activities will be conducted by the MCK, in partnership with local trappers. At all times, workers will not venture onto private property where homes are located without first obtaining the homeowners permission.
