12/05/2022
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke wishes to inform the community that Stephen McComber has taken the Oath of Office at today’s duly-convened Council meeting, and thus has begun his term as a Ratsénhaienhs (elected Council Chief).
The declaration was accepted by Consensus and was formalized via Mohawk Council Executive Directive.
The Oath of Office acknowledges that the primary duty of the Ratitsénhaienhs is to serve the community. Additionally, he/she must be accountable to the community, disclose conflicts of interests, act in good faith, and act within the scope of proper authority. The Oath of Office also acknowledges that a Ratsénhaienhs will be subject to actions and measures set forth in the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke Disciplinary Measures Regulations.
Ratsénhaienhs McComber was elected in the by-election conducted on Saturday, December 3, 2022 to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Barton Goodleaf. It was the second by-election in less than a month, following the voting-in of Iohahi:io Delisle in a similar by-election held on November 5, 2022. McComber’s term of office will expire in July 2024 with the remainder of the Ratitsénhaienhs.
