Extreme Cold Warning in Effect
02/02/2023
The Public Safety Division of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke is advising community members of an Extreme Cold Warning that will affect our region starting this afternoon until Saturday. Cold temperatures and moderate to strong winds will generate wind chill values between minus 38 and minus 42 Celsius.
These extreme temperatures can cause frostbite to exposed skin within minutes and/or hypothermia if not dressed appropriately. It’s recommended to dress in layers if you have to be outside. Those working outside should take breaks to warm up.
Kahnawa’kehró:non are also being reminded to take appropriate precautions if using space heaters and alternate sources of heat, such as gas or woodstoves, to ensure proper ventilation and to verify that your smoke and carbon monoxide (Co2) detectors are in good working order.
Please ensure to check on elders and those at risk during this period of extremely cold weather. Family pets are also at risk; ensure they have adequate shelter or bring them inside.
Additionally, the forecast is calling for snow flurries and local blowing snow, which could reduce visibility and/or cause white-out conditions tonight through Friday. Please consider delaying unnecessary travel.
Please monitor local media for updated weather forecasts.
