Community Ice Fishing and Fish Knowledge Event

02/20/2023

The Kahnaw:ke Environment Protection Office (KEPO) is partnering with the Kahnaw:ke Youth Center (KYC) and Reel ′Um In bait shop for a community Ice Fishing and Fish Knowledge event on Saturday, March 4, 2023, from 1pm to 6pm.

Fishing supplies and a meal will be provided to registered participants. Facilitators will be on hand to assist with setting up equipment and cleaning fish.

KEPO will be sharing how to check for abnormalities and how to contribute to the current Fish Health Study. KEPO has been working to collect community-provided fish samples as part of a study to test flesh for contaminants. Ni:wen to all who have participated so far.

Observations and comments on fish are also valuable contributions to this project. Sampling and studying harvested fish will help to better understand fish health through the traditional practice of ice fishing rather than other collection methods.

KEPO staff will also discuss fish health in the context of aquatic ecosystem health and stewardship.

To register for the Ice Fishing event, contact the KYC at 450-632-6601.

To contribute to the Fish Health Study, please contact KEPO at 450-635-0600 or environmentprotection@mck.ca or look for us on the ice!
