Change to the 2021-2024 Kahnawake Legislative Agenda
02/21/2023
The Kahnawà:ke Legislative Commission wishes to announce a change to the 2021-2024 Legislative Agenda. A request for amendments to the MCK Election Law was submitted on November 25, 2021, by the MCK Executive Office, and has been moved from the Community Decision Making and Review Process (CDMRP) Waiting List to the Legislative Agenda.
This legislative request follows the Type I Amendment Process. The Technical Drafting Committee (TDC) has defined the Scope of the proposed amendments as, “Provisions to assist with managing the election process as efficiently and effectively as possible, maintaining the Election Law so it is reflective of change to other impacting Laws, as well as addressing issues brought forward based on experiential knowledge.” (Please click here to view the proposed amendments).
The Purpose of the proposed amendments - “The Law is intended to provide the criteria and procedures for the nomination and selection of a twelve (12) member Council composed of eleven (11) Council Chiefs and one (1) Grand Chief.”
The TDC is comprised of: Onerahtókha Marquis, Andrea Montour, Mary Lee Armstrong, Alexis Shackleton, Angus Montour, Gerald Taiaiake Alfred, and Kevin Fleischer.
This request no longer follows the ‘Multiple Request Process’ due to the Kahnawà:ke Legislative Commission’s decision to remove a submission to amend the MCK Election Law, based on the Proponent’s failure to submit the required Legislation Request Form by a scheduled deadline.
More information, including dates and times for the Front-End Work will be forthcoming.
