KEPO update on illegal dumping

02/27/2023

The Kahnaw:ke Environment Protection Office (KEPO) wishes to inform the community that in an effort to discourage illegal dumping, trail cameras will be installed in areas identified as dumping hotspots throughout the community. As an added benefit KEPO will also use these cameras to monitor wildlife.

Those who come across garbage that has been dumped in the community are encouraged to report it using KEPOs online tracking form, that can be filled out anonymously at https://arcg.is/18T0mz0. This will help with cleanup efforts and in certain cases, may help identify persons involved in illegal dumping, and the Peacekeepers can be notified. This spring KEPO plans to work with the Waste Management Department to clean up some of the identified sites and community volunteers will be welcome to participate. More details on the cleanup will be shared as it becomes available.

Reports have shown that community members and non-locals alike have been guilty of illegal dumping in the past. Community members are being reminded to utilize local resources such as door-to-door collection services, drop-off of accepted material at the Transfer Depot, or to make private arrangements for disposal of waste not accepted at the Depot. For more information on disposal options available and what is accepted at the Transfer Depot, please contact the Waste Management Department at 450-632-5825.

For any questions or comments, please contact KEPO at 450-635-0600 or environmentprotection@mck.ca.
