KEPO Temperature and Depth Recording in Tioweroton Creeks and Lakes
05/18/2023
The Kahnaw:ke Environment Protection Office (KEPO) wishes to advise the community of temperature and depth recording in the Creeks and Lakes Gagnon, Little Gagnon, Red Trout, John, and Little John in Tiower:ton. The goal is to measure long-term trends in these waters to better understand the physical habitat available to fish in the Territory. This work is crucial for maintaining a healthy habitat for Tioti:kton (trout), as they are sensitive to high temperatures (above 20 C or 68 F).
Creek temperature logging stations have orange caps that are visible just below or just above the surface of the water. The white pipe contains a small sensor and is about 4 inches from the creek bottom. The map indicates their positions along the creek with orange dots. These were installed on Monday, May 15th.

Datalogging stations in lakes have been recording the temperature and depth since they were installed in August 2022. The stations are marked by white Styrofoam buoys that are approximately 2 feet below the waters surface with reflective buoys (pictured above center) to avoid interference with boaters.
KEPO appreciates your help to keep these stations operational. Please call 450-635-0600 or email at environmentprotection@mck.ca if you have any questions or concerns.
