Sports Complex to undergo Upgrades

05/29/2023

The Sports and Recreation Unit of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke is extremely pleased to announce new upgrades and renovations planned for the Kahnawà:ke Sports Complex.

Upgrades to the Arena building are made possible by a financial contribution from Kahnawà:ke Shakotiia′takehnhas Community Services (KSCS) through their Child and Family Services fund in the amount of $333,000. The following list highlights some of the areas that will be part of the upgrade:

  • Safety and accessibility/automatic doors to the entry for wheelchair access
  • Emergency exits upgrading
  • Six (6) foot glass around the ice surface (currently three (3) feet)
  • Dressing room doors
  • Renovated toilets and plumbing
  • All lighting to LED (energy saving, aesthetics)
  • Handicap ramp (Closer and shorter, along with handicapped parking)
  • Parking lot lighting

"We′re very excited for these upgrades and we hope that the community will be just as excited when they visit or use the facility," said Director of Sports and Recreation Roiatate Horn. “The upgrades will breathe new life into one of the longest-standing hubs of Kahnawà:ke sports.”

“We couldn′t have done this without the generous contribution from KSCS Child and Family Services,” said Ratsénhaienhs Harry Rice. “This will greatly enhance accessibility and safety, as well as make it a better experience for visitors and players alike.”

The upgrades are expected to be completed by January 2024. There may be some interruption to sports for the lighting and glass installation.
