Community Reminder to Adopt Safe Email Practices
07/20/2023
Due to recent email security breaches at several community organizations, the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke wishes to inform community members of some safety practices to keep your information safe.
To protect yourself and your email contacts, you should use extreme judgment and caution when opening emails containing links or attachments. Additionally, you can:
- Choose a secure, random password and change it regularly.
- Do not open an email attachment unless you are expecting it, even if you know the person who sent it – if you are unsure, you can ask the sender.
- Never enter your email credentials or personal information.
- Use the BCC line when sending emails to a group – this prevents all recipients from seeing each other′s emails, avoids creating an email thread, and can prevent the spread of email phishing scams.
- Set up two-factor authentication on your most important email, banking, and social media accounts. The chances of your accounts getting stolen will reduce dramatically.
- And finally – when in doubt, throw it out! Do not open emails, attachments, or links from people you don′t know, and if the subject line does not make sense to you, then delete it without even opening it.
Email security breaches can result in computer problems or having your personal, financial, and other information stolen, and can lead to data loss or identity theft. For more information on protecting your information and identity, visit: Protect Yourself Against Identity Theft - Canada.ca.
