KEPO Fish Monitoring in Kahnawake Recreation Bay and Creeks

08/22/2023

The Kahnaw:ke Environment Protection Office (KEPO) staff is conducting Fish and Fish Habitat Monitoring as a part of the Aquatic Stewardship Program (ASP), which studies the water quality and fish health and biodiversity in our communitys creeks. Information from these studies will contribute to the North Creek Community Visioning Project, whose ultimate goal is to complete a community-driven, community-evaluated restoration of the North Creek, also known as Whkeras Creek.

Data collection takes place between today (Tuesday, August 22) until Friday, September 8, 2023 using non-lethal sampling methods including minnow traps, seine nets, hoop nets, electrofishing, and collection of water samples for eDNA analysis. All healthy native fish will be released quickly after identification and measurement.

The Recreation Bay, North Creek and Delormier Creek are the subject of this years surveys. The map indicates areas of study in orange.

KEPO staff, equipment, and vehicles will be clearly marked, and community members are asked to please leave all equipment undisturbed. Questions and dialogue with KEPO staff to discuss the creeks, fish, and the Aquatic Stewardship Program are welcome and highly encouraged.

Please call KEPO at 450-635-0600 or email at environmentprotection@mck.ca if you have any questions, comments, or concerns.
