Fish Monitoring Collaboration in Recreation Bay August 30

08/29/2023

The Kahnaw:ke Environment Protection Office (KEPO) will be conducting Fish Monitoring with collaborators from the River Institute (RI) and the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne (MCA). A team of ten staff will conduct seine netting in the Recreation Bay tomorrow, Wednesday, August 30.

Knowledge gained from these collections will be used in the Fish Identification Nearshore Survey (FINS) run by the RI and by the MCA and KEPOs Aquatic Stewardship Program.

Both programs have been operating in Kahnaw:ke since the summer of 2021. FINS began in 2015 and aims to characterize fish biodiversity in the upper Saint Lawrence River nearshore habitats.

All native fish will be released unharmed, and the collaborators will be accompanied by KEPO staff at all times. KEPO encourages community members to stop by and ask questions about the work.

For more information on the FINS program, please visit https://riverinstitute.ca/research/fins.

Please call KEPO at 450-635-0600 or email environmentprotection@mck.ca for questions, comments, or concerns.
