Hydro-Quebec to trim trees and overgrowth

08/30/2023

The Mohawk Council of Kahnaw:ke (MCK) would like to advise the community regarding some important maintenance to Hydro-Qubecs poles and lines within the Territory.

Beginning the week of September 11, 2023, crews will start vegetation maintenance/removal operations in the area of Route 207, working towards the village over the next few weeks. The company, Asplundh, which employs several local residents, will carry out this work.

Over the last several months, our community has been hit with power outages and equipment failures, some of which were caused by overgrowth and trees contacting electrical lines and equipment, said Ratsnhaienhs Arnold Boyer, lead on the Infrastructure, Transport and Operations Portfolio. These outages have had a negative impact on the quality of life of our people, most of which could have been prevented by routine maintenance, such as tree trimming and the removal of vegetation from powerlines.

We contacted Hydro-Qubec and asked them to come into the community as part of preventative maintenance before the weather starts getting cold once again, Boyer continued.

The MCK Lands Unit is working to identify titleholders in the work areas and will be in touch with residents should crews require access to private lands.

The work is expected to be completed by the end of October 2023, weather and operational constraints permitting.

For more information, please contact Ratsnhaienhs Arnold Boyer or Lindsay LeBorgne at 450-632-7500.
