Peacekeepers encouraging community members to be vigilant

09/12/2023

Forwarded on behalf of the Kahnawake Peacekeepers

The Kahnawake Peacekeepers are encouraging community members to remain vigilant after a string of motor vehicle thefts within the Territory.

Peacekeepers are reminding community members to park their vehicles in well-lit areas, lock the doors, not leave any valuables inside the vehicle. It is also very important to block or obscure the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). In some cases, computers have been used to reprogram keys using the VIN.

In the interest of public safety, please do not confront or attempt to detain anyone, as a suspect could be armed and dangerous. Call the Peacekeepers immediately at (450) 632-6505 to report any suspicious activity.

Vehicle thefts are on the rise across the country. This is not a problem unique to Kahnawake, but the types of vehicles being targeted are popular in our community.

Since May 2023, there have been two (2) attempted vehicle thefts, three (3) successful vehicle thefts, and three (3) instances of vehicles being stolen elsewhere and located on the Territory. A total of six (6) arrests have been made during this period.
